GENEVIÈVE

It was something I couldn’t remember ever feeling about anyone else. I don’t know what it was, exactly. I don’t know if you could call it love at first sight. But I knew it had to be something.

I’d only known Kate for a day—one small, single, solitary day—and not even a whole one! But I could already feel the impact she had on me. The fact that I thought about her all night, in and of itself, was a big change from my regular reality.

Picking up flowers, surprising someone at work… that wasn’t something I normally would have done, and in fact, it was something I’d never done. If I was with a girl, then I was with a girl. That was it. We’d hook up, then she’d go home. Or I would. Either way.

I’d never put time or effort into getting into a relationship before, because I just didn’t care to. It wasn’t that I was selfish. I just didn’t care to. Maybe it was because my mother and I had never really set down roots before.

Growing up, I had gotten used to making friends and then leaving them behind whenever Mom decided we were going to move. I had gotten used to everything being temporary. I had gotten used to relationships being temporary. It was hard to change my way of thinking even now, over fifteen years later.

But something changed yesterday. And now? I guess now… the idea of actually starting a relationship that wasn’t going to be temporary was something I was going to have to start giving some serious thought to.

Kate called herself a romance expert, so that was what I was going to give her: romance.

I knew I’d absolutely blown her out of the water with those flowers I gave her this morning. I could tell by the look on her face that she wasn’t expecting anything like that, and honestly, it made me happy to see. I wasn’t sure if this was going to change my mind about the whole marriage thing or even getting into an actual relationship thing, but it was a start, I supposed.

As I drove into work, I thought about it some more.

What if I did have a relationship with her? I wondered. What would my life be like?

The thought of sharing my space, my stuff, and my life with someone seemed so odd before. But for some reason, the idea of sharing things with Kate didn’t seem so bad. I may have just met the girl, so maybe it was all fantasy, but it was a fantasy that I didn’t mind indulging in.

I got to the build site just after eleven in the morning. I knew where I’d left off the day before, so I went back and started up again on installing the floor beams on the house we were building.

Bang, bang… Smash, smash… Crack, crack…

I checked my watch over and over again…

Five minutes here, ten minutes there…

Why did this all suddenly seem… boring?

It was a typical day, but all I could think about was getting through it so I could see that girl again.
